HOW TO

Disable basemaps from being added to new maps in an ArcGIS Pro project

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

By default, in a new Map project, the World Topographic basemap vector tile service is automatically added to the map. Unless defined differently by the organization, this is the default basemap. In certain situations it is desirable to disable the basemap from being added to new maps. This can be done by editing project settings.

Procedure

The instructions provided describe how to disable the basemap service for new maps in ArcGIS Pro.

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, click the Project tab to open the backstage menu.

Click the Project tab to open project settings.

  2. On the left-hand menu pane, click Options.
  3. In the Options dialog box, click Map and Scene.
  4. Under the section for setting the default options for basemaps, select None.
  5. Click OK.

In Map and Scene, under the Basemap options, select None.

This disables basemap services from being automatically added to new maps. As shown in the image above, the type of basemap added can also be changed by selecting Custom Basemap and selecting the desired basemap from the drop-down menu. All default, organizational, and custom basemaps are listed.
