Bug: Exporting a map crashes ArcMap when Avast Antivirus is installed


When attempting to export a map, ArcMap may freeze or stop functioning. Users may also see unexpected issues with the overall usability of ArcMap. The program may either crash or disable functionality in the software.


This is a known issue. If Avast Antivirus is installed, the program recognizes .dll files from the C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.2\bin as viruses.


Either disable Avast Antivirus, or whitelist the bin folder by following the steps below.

  1. To open the Avast user interface, right-click the Avast tray icon, and select Open Avast! User Interface.
  2. Navigate to Scan > Settings > Exclusions.
  3. Browse to a directory or path and select. Click Add > OK.
