Description
When attempting to check out feature classes for disconnected editing, the option to check out data for disconnected editing from within the ArcPad Data Manager toolbar is unavailable.
Cause
There are a number of circumstances that may restrict the ability to check out feature classes for disconnected editing:
• A feature class may be z-enabled with these values inherent in the geometry while others within the same .mxd are not.
If a feature class must store z-values at the geometry level, and it contains a vertical coordinate system, ensure that all other layers contain this shape type and coordinate system as well.
• The map document and feature classes within it do not share the same spatial reference.
Ensure that the data frame properties and feature class or raster datasets share the same spatial reference. It is generally not recommended that features of differing reference systems comprise a single .mxd that is being used as a staging area for ArcPad.
• Shapefiles cannot be checked out for disconnected editing.
• If a feature class has not been assigned a spatial reference system or has one that is undefined, the option is unavailable.
Solution or Workaround
In addition to checking the above criteria, the following best practices are suggested:
Pay particular attention to the period of time that data must remain checked out. Checking data out based upon a defined extent should be performed within a timeframe closely correlating to the field collection process.
Background layers cannot be checked in and this is particularly important with regard to shapefiles. While shapefiles can be copied to the mobile device via Mobile Device Manager, changes performed to these layers while in the field cannot be 'merged' with the existing shapefiles.
