HOW TO

Display hours, minutes, and seconds in the Network Analyst Directions window

Last Published: July 21, 2023

Summary

If a network dataset is already set up for Directions, and Minutes is set up for a Cost, it is possible to display hours, minutes, and seconds in the Directions window. The default setting for network datasets display only hours and minutes.

Procedure

The two files that determine the formatting for the Network Analyst Directions window are located in the following file location. These files are named 'directions.xml' and 'resources.xml':

  • 64-bit Operating System:
    C:\Program Files(x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.x\NetworkAnalyst\Directions
  • 32-bit Operating System:
    C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.x\NetworkAnalyst\Directions

Use the reformatted XML files in the Related Information section below to display hours, minutes, and seconds for the directions.

Note:
There are separate files for ArcGIS 10.0. These are different than the files to be used with ArcGIS 10.1, 10.2, 10.2.1, 10.2.2 and 10.3.

Replace directions.xml and resources.xml with the XML files below that correspond to the installed version of ArcGIS. If planning to revert back to the original settings, save the original resources.xml and directions.xml files.

Note:
• The 'directions.xml' file controls the threshold parameters. Changes made in the XML file below modify it to no longer use minute granularity.
• The 'resources.xml' file controls the display units. Changes made in the XML file below modify the formatting strings to display both minutes and seconds.
