BUG

ArcGIS applications can crash when the request for a map service times out

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When map service layers, such as Bing Maps or ArcGIS Online Basemaps, are drawn in ArcGIS Desktop applications (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcReader) or ArcGIS Engine, multiple requests are made simultaneously and then tiles are drawn for the given extent. In situations where these requests take longer to respond, the requesting application can crash.

Cause

ArcGIS Desktop applications (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcReader) or ArcGIS Engine can crash accessing a tiled internet service (such as Bing Maps or ArcGIS Online Basemaps) when the request for a map service times out. These crashes occurred more frequently at version 10.0 Service Pack 2.

Workaround

The ArcGIS 10.0 SP2 (Desktop, Engine) Internet Tiled Layers Patch has been released to resolve this problem. This patch ensures that the situation which causes the crash is avoided, and ensures that map tiles returning after longer timeouts are properly handled. This patch is included in ArcGIS Desktop 10 Service Pack 3 and subsequent service packs.

Download and install the latest service pack for ArcGIS Desktop 10 from the ArcGIS Resource Center.
