PROBLEM

Can't access ArcGIS Online data after installing GeoSoft® applications

Last Published: April 26, 2020

Description

After installing GeoSoft® extensions for ArcGIS 3.2, data can no longer be added to ArcMap from ArcGIS Online. The menu item used to launch ArcGIS Online is disabled (grayed out).

Cause

There is a bug in release 3.2 of the GeoSoft Extensions for ArcGIS (Target or Geochemistry) that conflicts with the code Esri uses to access ArcGIS Online servers. This may also cause some ArcGIS Add-In pop-up windows to fail to display.

Solution or Workaround

Warning:
The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

ESRI cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions; therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.
  1. Close any ArcGIS applications.
  2. Launch the Registry Editor. Click Start > Run. In the Run dialog, type regedit.
  3. Browse to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Assemblies\Global
  4. Delete any entries that start with ESRI.ArcGIS.Desktop.AddIns.
  5. Browse to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Assemblies\Global
  6. Delete any entries that start with ESRI.ArcGIS.Desktop.AddIns.
  7. Close the Registry Editor and open Windows Explorer.
  8. Browse to C:\Windows\assembly and find ESRI.ArcGIS.Desktop.AddIns. Right-click this assembly and click Uninstall.
  9. Restart ArcMap. ArcGIS Online should now be available.
Note:
The GeoSoft bug was fixed in release 3.3 SP2. If any earlier versions of the GeoSoft extensions were previously installed on the system, the above registry edits may still be needed to completely fix the issue.
