ArcGIS Desktop Add-in templates are not listed in Visual Studio

ArcGIS Desktop add-in templates are not listed in Visual Studio. ArcGIS 10 introduced the ArcGIS Desktop add-in model, which makes it easier to build and share ArcGIS Desktop customization. To simplify development, the ArcObjects software development kit (SDK) includes an Add-Ins Wizard that integrates with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1 or 2010.

Cause

ArcGIS Desktop add-in templates are an optional installation feature included with the ArcObjects software development kit (SDK) for .NET. If ArcGIS Desktop add-in templates are not listed in Visual Studio, verify that ArcGIS Visual Studio IDE Integration Framework is installed.

Solution or Workaround

Using the same ArcGIS Desktop installation media, choose to install the ArcObjects SDK for Microsoft .NET Framework. In the setup dialog, select the IDE Integration feature. This step installs all the ArcObjects templates into Visual Studio, including the ArcGIS add-in templates.
