Fail to connect to database in ArcGIS Mapping for SharePoint

Error Message

During the installation of ArcGIS Map Web Part with ArcGIS Mapping for SharePoint 2.0 on a machine with SharePoint Server 2010, the following error may be returned:

"Fail to connect to database."

Cause

This error is a result of a permissions issue for accessing the SQL Server database.

Solution or Workaround

The instructions provided below describe how to troubleshoot this issue. Re-check the error after each step to see if the issue has been resolved.

  1. Go to the Services console and make sure that SharePoint 2010 Administration and SQL Server services are running: Click Start > Run, type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Re-install the ArcGIS Map Web Part as an administrator. Right-click the setup.exe installation wizard and select 'Run as Administrator'.
  3. Go to Server Manager > Local Users and Groups > Groups. Check the following three groups:

    • WSS_ADMIN_WPG
    • WSS_RESTRICTED_WPG_V4
    • WSS_WPG

    Make sure the account is added in these three groups.

  4. Check the login for SQL Server Management Studio.

    A. In SQL Server Management Studio, go to the Security/Logins folder.
    B. Right-click on the login account and click Properties.
    C. In the Login Properties window, click Server Roles on the left and make sure the 'sysadmin' role is checked.

    D. In the Login Properties window, click User Mapping on the left and select the Sharepoint_Config item. Make sure the 'WSS_Content_Application_Pools' database role is checked.
