Problem: Location of geodatabase annotation not preserved when exporting to Microstation DGN or AutoCAD DWG/DXF format

Exporting annotation from the file or personal geodatabase to a Microstation DGN or AutoCAD DWG/DXF format moves the annotation to a column in the output CAD file so the text entities are in the wrong location.

The HorizontalAlignment and VerticalAlignment fields in a geodatabase annotation feature class may display the following values:

HorizontalAlignment values:

  • Left
  • Center
  • Right
VerticalAlignment values:
  • Top
  • Center
  • Baseline
  • Bottom
However, these values are aliases. See below for the actual values for these fields, which are numeric.

Solution or Workaround

Allowable values in the HorizontalAlignment field are:

  • 0 displays as Left in the field
  • 1 displays as Center in the field
  • 2 displays as Right in the field
Allowable values in the VerticalAlignment field are:
  • 0 displays as Top in the field
  • 1 displays as Center in the field
  • 2 displays as Baseline in the field
  • 3 displays as Bottom in the field
In an ArcMap session, open the annotation attribute table, and calculate the values in the HorizontalAlignment and VerticalAlignment fields to change the position of the annotation text in relation to the feature it relates to - annotation with a road name for example. This takes some testing, since the ultimate position of the output text in the CAD file depends not only on this value, but also the font, font size, and other parameters.
