Frequently asked question

Why is the Upgrade Geodatabase button on the geodatabase property page disabled after installing ArcGIS 10 Service Pack 1?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

Background
After installing ArcGIS 10 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Service Pack 1, the Upgrade Geodatabase command on the geodatabase property page is disabled, and the Upgrade Geodatabase geoprocessing tool cannot be run.

Answer
The Upgrade Geodatabase command and geoprocessing tool are enabled when either the geodatabase or the underlying ArcSDE system tables and stored procedures require upgrading.

At ArcGIS 10 SP1, ArcSDE geodatabases running on the following DBMSs do not require upgrading, as SP1 does not contain any changes to the ArcSDE system tables and stored procedures for these platforms:

▪ SQL Server
▪ PostGreSQL
▪ Informix

The Upgrade Geodatabase command and the Upgrade Geodatabase geoprocessing tool are also disabled on machines running any combination of the following software and patches.

▪ ArcGIS 10.0 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Geodatabase Replication Upgrade Patch
▪ ArcSDE 10.0 General Update Patch for SQL Server

In addition, geodatabase upgrades are disabled when the following patch has already been installed, as this patch already includes all the changes required at ArcGIS 10.0 Service Pack 1:

▪ ArcGIS 10.0 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Geodatabase Replication Upgrade Patch
Note:
For machines running DB2 or Oracle, there are additional changes introduced at ArcGIS 10.0 Service Pack 1 which require running upgrades.
