PROBLEM

Characters in the results of an 'identify' operation performed in a Web Mapping application appear 'garbled'

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When an identify operation is performed against data referencing a domain containing international character sets (such as Greek, Arabic, Cyrillic, etc.), the resulting output may be formatted improperly using ASCII based characters.

Cause

The local ArcGISSOC account has not been configured to use the regional language required.

Solution or Workaround

To address this issue, use the 'Regional and Language Options' tool in the control panel to set the ArcGISSOC account to use the desired language.

  1. Log into the ArcGIS Server machine under the local ArcGISSOC account.
  2. Open the Windows control panel and double-click 'Regional and Language Options'.
  3. Use the drop-down list to define the appropriate locale. If the language in question is not listed in the drop-down list in the Regional Options tab, the supplemental language pack may be required to be installed. Click the 'Languages' tab and select the appropriate language pack to install. A restart may be required for the changes to take effect.
