How To: Make a cache using World Mercator Auxiliary Sphere (wkid 102100) for use with Bing Maps and ArcGIS Online services

When caching using the 'Bing Maps/Google Maps' tiling scheme in ArcCatalog or ArcGIS Manager, the cache is based on Web Mercator with an ID of 102113. If the underlying data used in the cache has a datum that is not in WGS 1984, the resulting cache will not overlay correctly with Bing Maps or ArcGIS Online services that are already in the 'Bing Maps/Google Maps' scheme.

Instructions provided describe how to build the cache using the Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere) with an ID of 102100, so that the data caches correctly.

  1. Download conf102100.zip from the link in the Related Information section below and unzip it anywhere on the computer that is accessible by ArcCatalog or ArcGIS Manager.
  2. Start the service that needs to be cached.
  3. In ArcCatalog, go into the Service Properties and click on the 'Caching' tab. In ArcGIS Manager, click 'Edit' and click on the 'Caching' tab.
  4. Under 'Draw this map service', select 'Using tiles from a cache you will define below' (ArcCatalog) or 'Using tiles from its cache' (ArcGIS Manager).
  5. Click 'Load tiling scheme from...'. Under 'Load from', select 'A tiling scheme file' from the drop-down list.
  6. Navigate to the location conf101200.xml was placed in Step 1. Click 'Add'. At this point, the Web Mercator (Auxiliary Sphere) tiling scheme is being used. Continue caching any selections needed for other services.
