Error Message

After installing ArcGIS Desktop using the 'Register now using the Internet (Recommended)' option to authorize the software returns the following error:

Cause

This error is generated when European language characters, such as the umlaut (e.g., �), are used to fill out the parameters required for registering ArcGIS Desktop over the Internet.

Solution or Workaround

• Visit service.esri.com, and select the 'Product Registration' tab, register ArcGIS online, and receive an authorization file by way of e-mail from ESRI. Use the authorization file to complete the registration of ArcGIS Desktop using the option 'I have received a license file from ESRI and am ready to complete the registration process' in the Desktop Administrator.
• Do not use European characters such as umlauts when registering ArcGIS Desktop.
