Frequently asked question

Can ArcIMS 9.2 and 9.3 consume Image Server services?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

ArcIMS 9.2 and 9.3 can consume image services published from any version of Image Server. The process for consuming an image service from any version of Image Server is identical, as the service must be consumed through a map document (.mxd), which is then published in ArcIMS using the ArcMap Extension for ArcIMS (an ImageService cannot be used from an AXL file). To publish a map document containing the image service, the following components must be installed on the ArcIMS Server:

- ArcEngine installation from the ArcGIS Image Server DVD
- ArcGIS Image Server Client Core
- ArcGIS Image Server Client

The ArcGIS Image Server Client Core provides the framework to support the connection to the ArcGIS Image Server, and the ArcGIS Image Server client is the component required to support the image service layer in the .mxd.

Warning:
ArcIMS works on the premise that it will have continous access to the data source (in this instance an ArcGIS Image Server service). If for any reason the Image Server fails to respond to an ArcIMS request, a map service may fail or unexpected behavior may be experienced.
