Unable to calculate statistics or build pyramids on an SDE raster stored in a SQL Server 2005 database.

Description

Calculating statistics or building pyramids on an SDE raster dataset stored in a SQL Server 2005 database results in a failure of the geoprocessing tool or a crash of the ArcGIS application. If the process was initiated in the SDE command line, the process does not complete.

Cause

This behavior occurs when SQL Server 2005 does not have Service Pack 2 installed, which is a requirement for SDE at 9.3 (see the System Requirements page).
