PROBLEM

Text does not display correctly in exported EPS files in Photoshop, Illustrator when using 'Embed all documents fonts'

Last Published: January 28, 2021

Description

Note:
This article pertains to ArcGIS versions 9.x and 10.0. Later versions of ArcGIS may contain different functionality, as well as different names and locations for menus, commands and geoprocessing tools.

Some or all characters in maps exported to EPS from ArcMap do not display correctly or display as incorrect characters in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, etc.

For example, the text strings in the following EPS display as random characters in Adobe Illustrator CS3:

[O-Image] Text strings display incorrectly Illustrator

Cause

The most likely reason this has occurred is because of the PostScript Level setting used when the map was exported to EPS. PostScript Level 3 is not as portable as PostScript Level 2.

This is the same map as in the previous example with the PostScript Level set to 2:

[O-Image] Text strings display correctly Illustrator

Solution or Workaround

Change the PostScript Level to 2.

  1. Navigate to File > Export Map.
  2. Click the Save as type drop-down, and select 'EPS (*.eps)'.
  3. Click the Format tab.
  4. Click the PS Language Level' drop-down, and select 2.
  5. Set other EPS export format options as desired and click Save to complete the export.
