When do COM references have to be released?

Answer

In .NET ArcGIS Engine applications, to ensure a COM object is released when it goes out of scope, use the ComReleaser class for all singletons. The ComReleaser class can be found in the ESRI.ArcGIS.ADF.dll assembly. 
Note:
Explicitly releasing COM references is not necessary for ArcGIS Desktop applications.
