Why can't some basic raster tasks be performed on HDF and NITF datasets?
The HDF and NITF dataset formats do not allow the user to do several basic tasks: editing the spatial reference, building pyramids, or calculating the statistics.
The HDF and NITF dataset formats are quite different than most files. They are containers that allow for subdatasets to exist underneath the parent file. Each of these subdatasets can also have multiple bands and can often differ from one subdataset to another. For these reasons, some functions, such as editing spatial reference, statistics, and pyramids, have been blocked.
To work more interactively with the data inside a subdataset file, use the Extract Subdataset tool to extract out the particular file desired.
