BUG

Limitations on number of available file handles in Solaris

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

Various errors can occur with ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Engine, or ArcReader on Solaris platforms due to a limited number of available file handles. Specifically, there are known problems with Simple Line symbols, general raster display, and licensing, but additional problem areas may occur.

Cause

The Solaris operating system has a 256 fopen()FILE handle limit.

Workaround

Starting with version 9.3, this issue is no longer a problem for ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS ArcMap Server, ArcGIS Engine, and ArcReader on Solaris 10 releases distributed after June 2007, which then takes advantage of Sun’s new 'extended FILE' facility running on a Solaris system that supports this functionality. This substantially expands the number of files that ArcGIS can have open simultaneously on Solaris.

Currently, Sun’s 'extended FILE' support is only available on newer releases of Solaris 10 (distributed after June 2007).

To add 'extended FILE' support for ArcGIS 9.2, with releases of Solaris 10 distributed before June 2007, the following patches are recommended:

125100-04 Kernel Update Patch

120473-05 libc nss ldap PAM zfs Patch

125800-01 Fault Manager Patch
