How To: How to install ArcGIS Desktop and the ArcGIS License Manager with a concurrent use floating license
Instructions provided describe how to install ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor or ArcInfo level) and the ArcGIS License Manager.
Specific information for the installation of ArcGIS Desktop is included with the product's Installation Guide.
This installation requires the following software:
· ArcGIS Desktop Installation DVD / CD
· Hardware key dongle(s)
Do not plug in the hardware key yet. If it is plugged in already, remove it before proceeding.
If there is already a license file, skip to the Procedure section below.
If there is not a license file, follow these steps:
GETTING LICENSE FILE
B. Click the License Management tab.
D. Click 'Add newly purchased licenses to a new or existing license server'.
F. Complete all forms with the user information and click Next.
P. The license file is sent by way of e-mail.
Q. Save the license to the computer where the ArcGIS License Manager is going to be installed.
- INSTALLING THE LICENSE MANAGER
Go to the machine where the ArcGIS License Manager is going to be installed.
This machine does not have to be the same machine on which ArcGIS Desktop is installed.
A. Remove previous versions of the License Manager:
1) Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
2) Look for ArcGIS License Manager or ESRI License Manager and remove them if they exist.
3) Remove the hardware key driver: click Remove for 'Sentinel Protection Installer' or 'Sentinel System Driver' if they exist.
B. Insert the ArcGIS Desktop Concurrent Use DVD.
C. Select ArcGIS Desktop from the first screen.
D. Select 'Install ArcGIS License Manager'.
E. Follow the prompts to install the ArcGIS License Manager. When it asks for the license file, browse to the location where the license file that was sent by e-mail is saved (see Before Beginning section).
F. When the ArcGIS License Manager installation is complete, confirm the reboot. When the Windows screen turns black, insert the hardware key, otherwise known as a dongle.
At this point the ArcGIS License Manager is installed. If ArcGIS Desktop needs to be installed, please proceed with the remainder of this article.
- REMOVE PREVIOUS SOFTWARE VERSIONS
Removing the program does not remove map data.
Go to the machine where ArcGIS Desktop is going to be installed and follow these steps to remove previous versions of ArcGIS software:
A. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
B. Select Remove for ArcGIS Desktop, if it is listed.
C. Select Remove for all versions of Python, if any are listed.
D. Select Remove for any third party or custom extensions that were installed for ArcGIS Desktop. They may be reinstalled after installing ArcGIS.
E. Select Remove for all other previous version of ESRI Software, such as ArcGIS ArcView 9.0, ArcIMS 9.1, or ArcReader 9.0.
- INSTALLING ArcGIS DESKTOP
Go to the machine that ArcGIS Desktop is going to be installed on and insert the ArcGIS Desktop Concurrent Use DVD.
A. Select ArcGIS Desktop from the first dialog box.
B. Select Install ArcGIS Desktop.
C. If installing any extensions: 1) Select the extensions on the Select Features dialog box by clicking the + next to extensions. 2) Click the red x next to the appropriate extension(s). 3) Select 'Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive'.
D. During the installation it asks to browse for the ArcGIS License Manager.
If the ArcGIS License Manager is installed on the same machine that ArcGIS Desktop is being installed, enter the correlating machine name.
If the machine name is unknown, go to Start > Run and type 'cmd'. In the console window that opens type 'hostname' and press Enter. This returns the machine name.
If installing Desktop on a different machine than where the ArcGIS License Manager is installed, enter the machine name where the ArcGIS License Manager was installed.
E. Complete the installation.
To verify the software is installed and running properly, go to Start > Programs > ArcGIS. Click on the shortcut for ArcMap. The application should open. If there are licensing errors, see the link in Related Information for troubleshooting tips.
