HOW TO

Rotate point shapefile symbology within ArcGlobe

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to rotate symbology for point shapefiles that are added to ArcGlobe as 3D vectors.

When applying a rotation field to a 3D vector's symbology with 'Character Marker' symbols, the rotation is ignored. The reason 'Character Marker' symbols fail to rotate is because ArcGlobe billboards the symbols causing them to always point in one direction.

Procedure

  1. Add a point shapefile to ArcGlobe as 3D Vector.
  2. Right-click on the shapefile, select Properties and then click the Symbology tab.
  3. Click Advanced and then click Rotation.
  4. Select the field that contains the rotation values and select the rotation style. Click OK.
  5. Click the Symbol button and select Properties.
  6. Click the dropdown for 'Type' and select '3D Character Marker Symbol'.
  7. Choose the symbology by clicking the 'Character' button. Optionally, set the other desired parameters within this dialog.
  8. Click OK three times.
