FAQ: Why Did the Compression Quality Range Change for JPEG 2000 in ArcGIS 9.2?

In previous versions of ArcGIS, the compression quality for JPEG 2000 files ranged from 1 to 255. Since ArcGIS 9.2, the compression quality for JPEG 2000 now ranges from 1 to 100.

Previous versions of ArcGIS only supported JPEG 2000 compression for ArcSDE rasters. As of ArcGIS 9.2, JPEG 2000 compression support has been added for File Geodatabase rasters and for the JPEG 2000 file format.

The implementation for the JPEG 2000 file format uses a quality range of 1 to 100. In order to offer a common quality range for both the ArcObjects API and the Geoprocessing tools, ArcGIS 9.2 and later versions use a compression quality range from 1 to 100. A value of 100 represents the same quality previously represented by 255; the new default value, 75, maps to the previous value, 150.
