Problem: ArcGIS 9.2 and higher release applications cannot automatically create a spatial grid index for feature classes stored in ArcSDE 9.1
The spatial index of a feature class created in an ArcSDE 9.1 geodatabase is not created automatically by an ArcGIS 9.2 application.
Beginning with ArcGIS 9.2, spatial grid indexes are created automatically for ArcSDE 9.2 feature classes using an ArcSDE binary storage type. However, the underlying functionality to automatically generate a spatial grid index in an ArcSDE 9.1 geodatabase does not exist.
Therefore, it is not possible for an ArcGIS 9.2 or higher application, such as ArcCatalog or geoprocessing conversion tools such as Copy Features or Feature Class to Feature Class, to automatically generate a spatial grid index on a feature class created in an ArcSDE 9.1 geodatabase.
Solution or Workaround
Manually enter the grid index values and create the spatial grid index by using one of the following:
- Right-click the feature class in ArcCatalog and click Properties. On the Indexes tab of the Feature Class Properties dialog box, click the Recalculate button.
- Use the Add Spatial Index geoprocessing tool in the Data Management Tools toolbox, and specify the spatial grid values.
- Set the spatial grid index parameters when loading data using the geoprocessing tools Copy Features in the Data Management Tools toolbox or Feature Class To Feature Class in the Conversion Tools toolbox.
See the ArcGIS Desktop Help for more information on how to use Geoprocessing tools.
