PROBLEM

ArcScene is not extruding features correctly

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When applying base heights to a shapefile using a multi-band image as the height source, it does not drape on top of the image.

Cause

In ArcScene, draped features use the maximum resolution of the elevation raster, but that elevation layer is resampled by default. As a result, a much precise draped feature is displayed but on a coarse base surface, which is the cause of the misalignment.

Solution or Workaround

There are two solutions:

  • Convert the multi-band image to a TIN. From the 3D Analyst menu of the 3D Analyst toolbar, select Convert > Raster to TIN.
Specify the TIN as the Height Source.
  • Change the base surfaces resolution to its original resolution. In ArcScene, right-click on the shapefile and select Properties. On the Properties dialog box, select the Base Heights tab and click the Raster Resolution button.

    Warning:
ArcScene may crash when increasing the raster resolution for large rasters.
