Error: Failed to connect to registration server during registration process

Error Message

During the registration process for ArcView or ArcEditor Single Use, the following error message is displayed:

"Failed to connect to registration server."

This happens because the computer has a firewall enabled, or does not have a network connection to the Internet.

Solution or Workaround

Verify the computer has a TCP/IP Internet connection and that any firewalls are disabled.

If a connection to the Internet can not be established and/or the firewall disabled, obtain a single use authorization file.

  1. Register ArcView or ArcEditor single use online and receive an authorization file by email at http://service.esri.com.

If you do not have any internet connection, call (888) 377-4575 or contact your local distributor.
  2. Once you receive the authorization file, *.ESU9 or *.TXT, save it to the computer and start the registration wizard. Navigate to Start > Programs > ArcGIS > Desktop Administrator, select the 'Register Single Use and Extensions' folder and then click the Register Now button.
  3. On the first screen of the registration wizard, select 'I have received an authorization file from ESRI' and then follow the rest of the wizard.

If Windows XP Service Pack 2 is installed, disable the Internet Connection Firewall. See the link in the Related Information section below for a Microsoft TechNet article on this procedure.
