Error: Application ArcPad.exe Has Performed an Illegal Operation and Will Be Shut Down

ArcPad crashes and displays the following error:

"Application ArcPad.exe has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"

Cause

One of the possible causes of this error could be that ArcPad isn't supported by the operating system.

Solution or Workaround

ESRI doesn't certify a specific hardware configuration but does provide information regarding the necessary components to run ArcPad successfully.

ESRI's product specifications for ArcPad 7.0 on Windows CE devices are:

- Windows CE 2.11, 2.12, CE 3.0, used by Pocket PC, Pocket PC 2002, and Handheld PC 2000.
- CE .NET, such as CE 4.x, used by Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC/Pocket PC 2003.
- Microsoft ActiveSync 3.0, 3.1, 3.5, 3.6, or 3.7, installed on a desktop PC.

- One from the following CPU chips:
Hitachi SH3
Hitachi SH4
ARM (including Intel StrongARM, Intel XScale, Samsung S3C2410)
MIPS x86 (used by Juniper Systems' Allegro Field PC)

Note:
The recommended RAM on the Windows CE device is 64MB or more, if available.
