ArcMap does not display margins or the page size correctly for some HP DesignJets

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

The page layout displays the map off the page and margins appear in the wrong place.
[O-Image] Margins and printable area shift off the page

Cause

One issue, among several possible, is with HP's driver for the DesignJet 5000, 5500 or 800 series printers and the maximum printable area and minimum required printer margins it is reporting to ArcMap, especially with drivers with a version prior to 6.15.

Solution or Workaround

Change the margin option in the printer driver to use Small Margins.

Note:
The location of the Small Margins setting in the currently installed driver may differ from the instructions below; however, this option should be in a similar location.

  • If the driver installed is the HP DesignJet 5000 42 or 60 by HP version 5.35, in ArcMap, navigate to File > Page and Print Setup. Select the HP DesignJet 5000 printer and click the Properties button. Select the Advanced and check on the Extended Margins box. This causes the bottom margin to move up and should improve the issue.
  • Download and install the HP Designjet 5500ps 42 or 60 by HP version 6.15 driver from the link in the Related Information section and use it for either the 5000 or 5500.

In ArcMap, navigate to File > Page and Print Setup. Select the HP DesignJet 5000 printer and click the Properties button. Click the Margins button and select the Small Margins radio button.
