How To: Enable the ArcGIS equivalent of the RJS_ANNO_PRE81 environment variable in Workstation ArcInfo for Coverage Annotation display
Instructions provided describe how to enable the ArcGIS equivalent of the RJS_ANNO_PRE81 environment variable in Workstation ArcInfo for Coverage Annotation display. ArcGIS 9.1 Service Pack 1 provides a mode to enable behavior equivalent to the RJS_ANNO_PRE81 environment variable in Workstation ArcInfo for Coverage Annotation display.
The following procedures describe the process of creating a registry key to enable the behavior.
The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

Close all ArcGIS applications.
Determine if the key exists in the registry:
A. Start the Registry Editor by navigating to Start > Run, type 'regedit' and then click OK. B. On the left side of the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI\ArcMap\Settings\Annotation\ C. Check in the right panel to see if a key named 'Pre81CovAnno' exists.
If the key does not exist, go to Step 3. If the key does exist, go to Step 4.
From the Edit menu select New > DWORD Value. Right-click on New Value #1 and click Rename. Rename this key Pre81CovAnno.
Edit the value of the registry key and set it to the desired value: A. In the registry window, double-click the name Pre81CovAnno to open the Edit DWORD Value dialog box. B. In the Value data field, type 1 to enable the pre-81 behavior or 0 to disable it. C. Click OK and exit the Registry Editor. D. ArcGIS now displays the coverage annotation using the pre-81 positioning.
