Problem: Some or all halos disappear when exported from ArcMap

Some or all halos in a map disappear when exporting to any ArcMap format. Printing is unaffected.

The default printer may be causing this problem.

ArcMap requires a hardware device context, or HDC, acquired from the printer, for all display and output. When exporting, ArcMap uses the HDC from the default printer on the computer. Sometimes, the default printer's HDC may cause problems, particularly with halos. This problem has been seen to occur most frequently with printers that are known as multifunction printers, such as Savin printers.

There may be other reasons why halos are not exporting and the following workaround may not work in all cases.

Solution or Workaround

Change the default printer to a non-multifunction printer.

  1. Navigate to Start > Control Panel > Printers.
  2. Right-click on the printer to be the new default printer and select 'Set as Default Printer'.

If the multi-function printer is the only printer installed or you want to use a "good known" printer for use with ArcGIS Desktop, see the link in the Related Information section to install a dummy printer.
  3. Restart ArcMap and try exporting again.

This problem may also be resolved by downloading and installing the latest printer driver from the printer manufacturer. However, if that does not resolve the problem, use the above procedure.
