Defining the spatial reference of a raster deletes the world file

Description

Note:
This issue is addressed in the ArcGIS Desktop 9.1 Raster patch.
Defining the spatial reference of a file-based raster in ArcCatalog or with the Geoprocessing tools causes the world file to be deleted. There is no way to restore the world file once it has been deleted.

Cause

This is a known issue.

Workaround

Download the patch by clicking the link in the Related Information section below.

If the patch is not available to you, follow the steps below.
  1. Make a copy of the world file using Windows Explorer.
Note:
This file extension is typically .sdw, .tfw, .jpw, or .bpw. 
  1. Define the spatial reference for the raster.
  2. Rename the copied world file to that of the original name using Windows Explorer.
