Network Analyst: Cannot get directions after opening a map document

Description

It is not possible to generate directions from a route or closest facility layer from an opened map document until solve has been executed.

Cause

In order to minimize the size of map documents, network analysis layers do not store the analysis results; only the geometry is stored. As a result, the analysis layer must be re-solved after opening the map document to have the traversal information needed to generate directions.

Solution or Workaround

1. Start ArcMap.
2. Open the map document.
3. Select the analysis layer you want to get directions.
4. Click the Solve button in the Network Analyst tool bar to solve the route again.
5. Click the Directions Window button to generate and display directions.
