Error: Unknown Host or 0x80004013, Machine xxxxxxx is not a valid server container
One of the following error messages is displayed in ArcCatalog when trying to add an ArcSOC Machine to ArcSOM for ArcGIS Server on UNIX:
"0x80004013, Machine xxxxxxx is not a valid server container. A Remote activation was necessary but was not allowed."
The Windows OS is able to resolve Machine Names using the WINS protocol. UNIX machines rely on DNS and hosts files for this functionality. This error message means that the name used was not resolved by the UNIX system.
Solution or Workaround
If the Machine Name is referenced in the ArcCatalog connection, add the Machine Name to the hosts file, /etc/hosts, on the UNIX machine.
Open the hosts file /etc/hosts and add a line referencing the Machine Name:
<IP ADDRESS> <MachineName> <Fully Qualified Domain Name>
For example, if the machine name was 'arcgisserver' and part of the ESRI network it would look like this:
192.168.1.1 argisserver arcgisserver.esri.com
