Error 1309 when performing a client installation from an admin setup, or when applying a service pack to an admin setup.

Description

During a client installation of ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit or ArcGIS Server Java ADF from an admin location, the following error message is displayed:

"Error 1309 - Error reading from file <path to file is provided>."

Cause

When performing an admin installation of ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Engine Developer Kit or ArcGIS Server Java ADF, you cannot install to a directory structure that contains more than 28 characters (including the \). Some of the Java samples are located in a directory structure that would exceed the Windows 256 character limit. If the Windows character limit is exceeded, file names will be truncated. When a client performs an installation from this admin location, or a service pack is applied to this admin location the installation will error because it cannot find the correct file (because the file name has been truncated).

Solution or Workaround

1. Abort the client installation where you are receiving the error messages.
2. Delete the current admin installation.
3. Reinstall the admin installation to a directory structure that contains less than 28 characters (including the \).
