Problem: Printing or exporting complex maps can cause ArcMap or ArcPress to hang, crash or generate errors.

When attempting to print or export a large, complex map, ArcMap or ArcPress may hang, crash or generate error messages.

While there can be several issues that may cause this to happen, many times it is simply the amount of information in the map that must be processed for output.

One example which may cause this is the processing of label and feature conflicts, especially if coupled with transparency or bitmap symbology. Removing any high label and feature weights may avoid these errors by reducing the resources necessary for conflict detection and total processing required to output the map.

Solution or Workaround

Feature and label weighting is used to decide how overlapping labels and features are drawn. Having too many feature- or label- weights set to High can cause excessive resource consumption on output.

To solve this, change as many feature weights as possible to none. Also set label weights to low for every layer that is not critical to the map. Set the critical labels to high so that they will be displayed.

Use the steps below to change these properties for each layer in your map.

  1. Right-click on the layer's name in the Table of Contents, and select 'Properties'.

  2. Go to the Labels tab, and click on the 'Placement Properties' button.

  3. Click the 'Conflict Detection' tab. Set the label weights to Low. Set the feature weights to None.
