HOW TO

Change the default Output Image Quality for exported maps

Last Published: April 26, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to change the default Output Image Quality (OIQ) for exported maps. In ArcGIS 9.0 the default OIQ for exports is set to Best. This can result in very large export files.

Procedure

Map export dialog parameters are contained in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI\Export\ExportObjectsParams. This registry key is not created until the first map is exported in any format from ArcMap by the current user. The String Value that controls the OIQ for each format is the RasterResampleRatio. Some export formats do not support OIQ and will not be listed.
Warning:
The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

Esri cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions; therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.
  1. Click Start > Run and type regedit. Click OK.
  2. Find the String Value RasterResampleRatio that applies to the format that is being changed. For example, the String Value emf_RasterResampleRatio applies to emf exports.
  3. Set the Value Data of the RasterResampleRatio String Value to reflect the quality setting desired. Value Data can be a number from 1 to 5, Best to Fast. For example, an OIQ setting of Fast corresponds to a 1:5 sampling ratio. So the RasterResampleRatio would be set to a value of 5 for Fast.
