HOW TO

Display more than 65536 records in a GRID Attribute Table (VAT)

Last Published: April 26, 2020

Summary

Instructions provided describe how to display more than 65536 records in a GRID Attribute Table. If there are more than 65536 records in a Grid attribute table, only 65536 records are displayed and used unless the registry setting is changed.

Procedure

Warning:
The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

Esri cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions; therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.

The value 65536 is hard-coded in the Registry at installation. This number can be increased by following the steps below.
  1. Navigate to Start > Run > regedit.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ESRI\Raster\Preferences.
  3. Change the value for grid.max_table_range
    to a larger number.

Note that the value does not have to be a multiple of 2 and the larger it is made, the slower operations relying on are.
  4. Reboot the PC.
  5. Delete the .aux file associated with the Grid(s) to ensure that they are recreated using this new registry setting.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the workspace that the Grids are located in and delete the file gridname.aux, where gridname is the name of the Grid.

The VAT now allows access to all the records once the Grid is used in ArcMap or ArcCatalog.
