How To: Change where geocoding locators are stored

Instructions provided describe how to change the location where geocoding locators are stored in ArcGIS 8.x and ArcGIS 9.x.

By default, new client-side geocoding services are stored in the user profile directory.

Windows 2000 & XP
C:\Documents and Settings\profile\Application Data\ERSI\Locators\servicename.loc

Windows NT
C:\WinNT\profiles\userprofile\Application Data\ESRI\Locators\servicename.loc

  1. Click Start > Run.
The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.
Esri cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions; therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.
  2. Type regedit and click OK.
  3. In the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI\ArcInfo\Locator\Settings.
    For 9.x, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI\CoreRuntime\Locator\Settings
  4. Right-click LocatorDirectory key and click Modify.
  5. Set the Value data to the desired location and click OK.
  6. Select File > Exit, to close the Registry Editor.
When the computer is ghosted the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI\ArcInfo\Locators\LocatorDirectory registry key may be set to an administrative profile that may not allow non-administrative users to create geocoding services.
