Error: Please enter a valid username on your domain

Error Message

When running the ArcIMS setup program, entering a Windows username and password may result in the following error:

Please enter a valid username on your domain.

The username does not exist in the specified domain or on the specified machine. For example, specifying a name without a machine or domain prefix causes this error. Entering 'MyAccount' would cause this error regardless of whether 'MyAccount' exists or not. However 'MyMachine\MyAccount' or 'MyDomain\MyAccount' would not produce this error as long this account exists on 'MyMachine' or in 'MyDomain'.

In rare cases, when installing ArcIMS on a machine that serves as a Windows Backup Domain Controller (BDC), the ArcIMS setup program may indicate that the username is not valid even when it is correct.

Solution or Workaround

The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

Esri cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions; therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.
  1. Confirm that the username is valid for the domain. Contact a network administrator to obtain a valid username, if necessary. If the error message continues to display and ArcIMS setup is on a BDC, continue through steps 2 to 5.
  2. Start the ArcIMS setup program. The 'Welcome to the ArcIMS Setup' dialog box will display.
  3. Find the esriims.dll file, stored in your TMP directory. To find the TMP directory:
  1. Start a command prompt.
  2. Type: 'set TMP'.
  3. Note the directory; the esriims.dll file is located in this directory.
  4. Close the command prompt.
  1. Replace the esriims.dll in this directory with the one from the Related Information section below.
  2. Continue with the install.
