Could not start ArcIMS Monitor 4.0 on the local computer

Error Message

Starting the ArcIMS Monitor 4.0 service reports the following error:

"Could not start ArcIMS Monitor 4.0 on the local computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly."

Cause

The sde.properties file is not created with correct values of the variables. The sde.properties file is created if you choose to install the Service Administrator while you are installing ArcIMS 4.0.

Solution or Workaround

1. If you do not want to use the Service Administrator
   -Find your monitor.properties file under <install Drive>\ArcGIS\ArcIMS\Server\monitor.
   -Comment out the variable named sdePropertiesFilename.
   Before:

   sdePropertiesFilename=Sde.properties

   After:

    #sdePropertiesFilename=Sde.properties  

2. If you want to use the Service Administrator
   -Find your sde.properties file, typically under <install Drive>\ArcGIS\ArcIMS\Server\monitor.
   -Open it in WordPad.
   -Make sure that the following variables have valid values:
   Example:

   autoSdeResurrect=False
   
   autoSdeRestore=False
   
   instanceNames=esri_sde
   
   portNumbers=5151
   
   sdehomes=C:/ArcGIS/ArcSDE/ora9iexe
   
   sdeSiteFilename=SdeSite.xml
   
   sdeStartTimeout=300
