ArcIMS Viewer must be removed before installing ArcIMS 4.0

Error Message

The following error message occurs when running ArcIMS40Setup.exe:

"ArcIMS Viewer must be removed before installing ArcIMS 4.0"

Cause

ArcIMS40Setup.exe checks for any installed software that might cause a conflict.

Solution or Workaround

Warning:
The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

Esri cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions; therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.

1. Open Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel. Remove the following programs if any are installed:
   
   · ESRI ArcIMS 3.x
   · ESRI ArcIMS Viewer
   · ESRI ArcExplorer - Java Edition 3.x
   · ArcIMS 3.1 Manager
   · AXL2AXL Converter

   Note:
   Do this step before the others. This is the recommended method to remove ESRI products. If Add/Remove Programs fails to remove them, proceed with the remaining steps.

2. Attempt to install ArcIMS 4.0 by running ArcIMS40Setup.exe. If you still receive a message to remove previously installed ArcIMS components, then proceed to Step 3.
3. Open the registry editor.
   1. Click Start > Run.
   2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit and press Enter.
   3. If either of the registry entries below exist, delete them.

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ESRI\AEJ WEBDOWNLOAD]

      Code:
      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ESRI\ArcIMS Manager WEBDOWNLOAD]

4. Find and delete these registry folders if they exist:

   Code:
   [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ESRI ArcIMS Viewer]

   Code:
   [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ESRI ArcIMS 3.1 Manager]

   Warning:
    Deleting a registry folder other than the ones given here can damage Microsoft Windows. Do not attempt this step unless you are sure you can find the folder given here.

5. You should now be able to install ArcIMS 4.0 by running ArcIMS40Setup.exe.
