FAQ: What are the character limitations on file names and command lines in PCAI?
What are the character limitations on file names and command lines in PCAI?
TEXT file names are limited to 51 characters (A message is given). All other file names are truncated to 64 characters (No warning).
The commands executed by &SYS and SYSTEM are truncated to 77 characters with no warning. &SETKEY is truncated to 77 characters with no warning.
Most subsystem command lines are limited to 128 characters. You will be given a warning when a command is truncated to 128 characters.
The arc processor can handle NON ARC commands lines up to 127 characters. ARC command lines can be up to 111 characters (127 minus the length of the path to PTOOL). If the command is too long, a message is given and the command is NOT executed.
SAVE (in ARCEDIT) and MCOPY (in ARCPLOT) are the weird ones. The lengths of the two pathnames plus 11 can not exceed 77 characters. If you do exceed this limit, a message will be given and the command will NOT be executed.
