Convert Albers HPGN/ HARN to Florida State Plane East NAD83

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Changing some Projections and Datums using the ArcView Projection Utility may require a two part process. The following article demonstrates how to convert the projection of a shapefile from Albers HPGN/HARN Florida Meters to Florida State Plane East NAD83 Meters in the two necessary parts.

Procedure

First convert Albers HPGN/HARN Florida Meters to Geographic HARN. Then convert Geographic HARN to Florida State Plane East NAD83 Meters.
  1. Convert From Albers HPGN/ HARN Florida Meters To Geographic HARN.

    Summary:
The following article demonstrates how to convert the projection of a shapefile from Albers HPGN/HARN meters to Geographic Coordinate System HARN.

    Procedure:
    INPUT:
    Base Projection: Albers
    Units: Meters
    Central Meridian: -84.0
    Central Parallel: 24.0
    Standard Parallel 1: 24.0
    Standard Parallel 2: 31.5
Geographic Coordinate System (Datum): GCS North American 1983 (HARN)
    False Northing: 0
    False Easting: 400000
    Datum: HARN

    OUTPUT:
Projection Name: Geographic Coordinate System NAD83 HARN
    Units: Decimal Degrees
    Datum: HARN
    1. Load the shapefile and initialize the Projection Utility.

      A. Start ArcView.
      B. Select File > Extensions.
      C. Check 'Projection Utility Wizard' and click OK.
      D. Create a new view and add the shapefile to be projected.
      E. Select File > ArcView Projection Utility.

      [O-Image] Projection Utility - Step1 dialog box

The shapefile should be listed in the ArcView Projection utility 'Step 1' dialog box if the shapefile is selected in the Table of Contents. If the Coordinate System field in the 'Step 1' dialog box shows 'Unknown', you need to define the input projection parameters (as shown below). If the content of that field is other than 'unknown', you can skip the input projection parameters definition.
    2. Click Next on the 'Step 1' dialog box. The 'Step 2' dialog box will appear.
    3. Define input projection parameters using the parameters shown above.
[O-Image] Projection Utility - Step 2 dialog box

      A. Make sure the 'Show Advanced Options' box is checked.
      B. Set Coordinate System Type to Projected.
      C. Set the Name dropdown list to Custom.
      D. Set the Units for your projection.
      E. Switch to the Parameter tab.
      F. Set the Base Projection.
      G. Set base projection parameters (Central_Meridian, Central_Parallel, and so forth).
      H. Set the Geographic Coordinate System.
      I. Set False Easting and False Northing.
      J. Set the Prime Meridian.

    4. Click Next on the 'Step 2' dialog box.
    5. Click Yes if you are prompted to save the coordinate system. The 'Step 3' dialog box will appear.
    6. Define the output projection parameters using the parameters shown above.

      A. Set Coordinate System Type to Geographic.

      B. Set the Name for the coordinate system.

      C. Set the Units for the coordinate system.

[O-Image] Projection Utility - Step 3 dialog box
    7. Click Next on the 'Step 3' dialog box.
    8. Specify the location of the new shapefile and name as GCS_HARN.shp.
    9. Click Next on the 'Step 4' dialog box.
    10. Review the Summary and click Finish.

  2. Convert From Geographic HARN To Florida State Plane East NAD83.

    Summary:
The following article demonstrates how to convert the projection of a shapefile from GCS HARN to Florida State Plane East NAD83 meters. This example assumes the Input shapefile has an accompanying projection definition file (*.prj).

    Procedure:
    INPUT:
Projection Name: Geographic Coordinate System NAD83 HARN
    Units: Decimal Degrees
    Datum: HARN

    OUTPUT:
    Projection Name: NAD_1983_Florida_East
    Units: Meters
    Projection: Florida State Plane
    Datum: NAD83
    Zone: East
