ArcMap incorrectly allows you to create new annotation in a nonversioned Geodatabase annotation feature class. This can cause problems with your ArcSDE Geodatabase.
The Draw Toolbar > Draw menu lists all Geodatabase annotation feature classes in the workspace being edited. This list includes both versioned and nonversioned feature classes. If you pick a nonversioned feature class as your Active Annotation Target, then add annotation to this table and save your edits, this can cause problems with your ArcSDE Geodatabase and the sde server process since it is expecting to have a versioned feature class in the edit session.
Do not set your Active Annotation Target to a nonversioned Geodatabase annotation feature class. You can tell that a feature class is nonversioned from ArcCatalog and the context menus for the feature class. If the option to register as versioned is enabled, then you know it has not been registered as versioned.
