Error Message

When attempting a unique values classification on a DBTheme, the following warning message will appear:

"Too many unique values"

As a result, not all features display in the view.

Cause

The SDE configuration.

Solution or Workaround

The MAXDISTINCT configuration parameter specifies the maximum number of values that can be used in an unique query on an SDE layer. In ArcView GIS, this value determines the maximum number of unique values that can appear in a DBTheme legend.

Follow the steps given below:

  1. Change the MAXDISTINCT parameter's value in the giomgr.defs file on the SDE server to suit your classification needs.
  2. Stop the SDE service.
  3. Restart the service to get the parameter changed to take affect.

    Note:
Changing this value may increase processing time.

  4. If using Direct Connect, add the following line to a new text file
    Code:
    MAXDISTINCT <value>

and Save As giomgr.defs in the AVHOME/DConnect/etc directory.
