Frequently asked question

What is the difference between the commands PROJECT and PROJECTDEFINE?

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Answer

The PROJECT command changes the coordinate system of a coverage, grid or ascii file of XY coordinates. PROJECT performs coordinate transformations between any two supported map projections.

The PROJECTDEFINE command writes projection information to the PRJ file of a coverage, grid, tin or ascii file of XY coordinates. The PROJECTDEFINE command does not change feature coordinates. To change the projection of a data set, you must use the PROJECT command.

Additional documentation on these commands can be found by searching on the keywords PROJECT and PROJECTDEFINE in the Index portion of the Workstation online help.
