PROBLEM

The coded value description gets added instead of the value when a default value is specified

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When adding a new record to a table in ArcMap, fields that use a coded value domain, and are set with a default value, get the coded value description instead of the value.

Cause

The Table Appearance dialog box has the 'Display coded value domain and subtype descriptions' box checked.

Solution or Workaround

Uncheck the 'Display coded value domain and subtype descriptions' box in the Table Appearance dialog box.

  1. Right-click the layer in the Table of Contents and select Open Attribute table, or right-click the standalone table in the Table of Contents and select Open.
  2. In the Attribute Table, click Options > Appearance, and uncheck 'Display coded value domain and subtype descriptions.'
