Metadata has not been created for selected item

Error Message

Previewing metadata even though it was previously created returns the error:

"Metadata has not been created for selected item"
In addition, clicking on the update/create metadata tool results in the message:
"Not able to update/create metadata"

Cause

Automatically update and/or create metadata boxes are unchecked in ArcCatalog > Tools > Options > Metadata tab.
OR
The Microsoft XML dll (msxml.dll) has not been registered correctly.

Solution or Workaround

If you still receive the messages after completing the first step, follow the steps in the second step.
  1. Configure ArcGIS to automatically create and update metadata.
    1. Start ArcCatalog.
    2. Select Tools > Options.
    3. Click the Metadata tab.
    4. Check the box: 'Automatically create metadata the first time . . .'
    5. Check the box: 'Automatically update metadata whenever . . .'
    6. Click OK.
  2. Register the msxml.dll file.

  1. Select Start > Run.
  2. Type 'command.com' in the Open field and click OK.
  3. Change directories to your system's system32 directory. For example:

  1. Type the following command to run the regsvr32.dll utility and press Enter:

regsvr32 msxml.dll
  1. Click OK.
  2. Type 'exit' at the command prompt; press Enter.
