HOW TO

Publish metadata for ArcIMS services

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Summary

Because metadata for map services in ArcCatalog is read-only, you may display it, but you may not create, edit, or synchronize it. Any functionality that currently exists for doing this will be disabled. In order to author metadata for map services, you must manually edit metadata and copy it to the appropriate virtual directory on the web server.

Procedure

  1. Create a virtual directory named Metadata.
  2. Use ArcCatalog to create a template metadata file. Use this file to generate each metadata file for your ArcIMS services.
  3. Create metadata files.

    Image Services

Create a metadata file in the Metadata virtual directory with the same name as the service. For example, if you have an Image Service named World, you would create the following file:

    c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Metadata\World.xml

    Note:
This file should contain Metadata information for the entire service and Metadata for each individual sub-layer.

    Feature Services

Create a directory with the same name as the service. Create a general service metadata file using the service name. Create metadata files for each feature class in the feature service to the new directory. For example, if you have a Feature Service named World_Features, with Cities and Countries layers, you would create the following directory and files:

    c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Metadata\World_Features.xml
    c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Metadata\World_Features\Countries.xml c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Metadata\World_Features\Cities.xml
