Why are ArcIMS group renderers not symbolized correctly in ArcGIS?

Answer

Each of the symbols of a layer based on an ArcIMS service using a group renderer show in the ArcMap table of contents. This is due to a difference between ArcIMS and ArcGIS symbology and rendering object models. Layers in ArcIMS services can have one or more renderers. Layers in ArcGIS are rendered with a symbol, which can be built based on one or more symbol layers.
