PROBLEM

Graphics appear at a different location than the original symbols when converting pie charts to graphics

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

ArcMap provides several options for symbolizing a layer with charts (pie charts, bar charts, and stacked charts). In some cases, if you use the Convert features to graphics command on a layer symbolized with these charts, the charts will appear at a different location after the conversion.

Cause

If you have checked the box to Prevent chart overlap on the Layer Properties dialog box (Symbology tab), chart symbols will be placed for your layer using the same logic used to place labels (the ESRI label engine). This logic prevents chart symbols from overlapping by potentially placing charts at different locations than their default positions.

In ArcGIS versions 8.1 and version 8.1 Service Pack 1, if you convert pie chart features to graphics, the converted charts will appear at the default location for each feature, and not at the location determined by the label engine.

Solution or Workaround

After converting the charts to graphics, manually select them with the Select Elements tool. Then move them to the desired location on the map.
